Init and heartbeat, both act as
process managers. Trying to fix init shortcomings inside of Heartbeat
must be tempting, but linux-ha people didn’t fall to hubris. So the
rest of us has a proper high-availability manager but one less init
alternative.
Just as 2005 was the year of the version control systems 2006 could be
the year of the init substitutes. When the dust sets maybe we’ll have
a clear init substitute, be it initng,
upstart, or
one of the other competitors. A strong
and mature init substitute would be a better candidate to integrate
high-availability functionality.
I hope that in the race to substitute init nobody gets hurt.
